7 packaging myths we need to bust

Joanne Howarth

We all have ideas about what packaging should be — but some of the most familiar beliefs simply aren’t true. Here are seven myths that deserve a second look, and what happens when we rethink them.

When it comes to packaging, paper may not, in fact, be the greenest of choices. Surprised? You’re not alone. Decades of greenwashing, under-equipped waste systems, and rapidly evolving material science have turned packaging into one of the most myth-riddled areas of sustainability. Brands and consumers are often quick to cling to assumptions such as “biodegradable = harmless” or “recycling can solve the plastic waste crisis.”

These myths are a result of misleading claims, outdated information, and our collective desire for quick fixes. They may feel convenient and emotionally satisfying, but all they really do is promote a false sense of security and hold us back from real progress.

That’s why I’ll be unpacking seven common packaging myths, from why they’re wrong to what truly sustainable alternatives look like.
