Merck: Advancing sustainable cold-chain packaging in Australia

Planet Protector Group Media

Global science and technology company Merck is transforming its cold-chain logistics in Australia by replacing traditional expanded polystyrene (EPS) insulation with more sustainable alternatives.

As part of this transition, Merck partnered with Planet Protector Group to implement wool-based and fibreboard insulation solutions for temperature-controlled pharmaceutical shipments. The change supports Merck’s broader sustainability commitments while maintaining the strict performance requirements of cold-chain distribution.

The packaging solution has been validated for Australian conditions, including summer transport scenarios, demonstrating that high-performance cold-chain protection and reduced environmental impact can go hand in hand.

This partnership reflects a growing shift across the pharmaceutical and life sciences sector toward practical, scalable alternatives to single-use EPS, and highlights how locally manufactured, circular materials can play a role in global supply chains.
